The Civil War in Kentucky became a brother against brother,
father against son, and friend against friend war. Few other
locations in the country experienced the destruction of family
bonds by the brutal war than did Kentucky. It is the most
compelling part of the war. Major families in Kentucky were
divided by the war - families like the Todds, the Clays, the
Breckinridges, the Crittendens, and others. Examining what
happened to these families will help us understand some of the
complicated views that persist to this day.
